Social Skills Intervention
Vista Outreach professionals evaluate students to determine areas of social skill need. We provide instruction individually and in small groups. Differentiated instructional practices and highly tailored social skill lessons meet students’ unique needs. Strategies are implemented in natural settings to promote generalization so each skill becomes one the students use.  Progress monitoring represents the student’s ability to apply skills in real life situations.

Disability awareness training, offered as part of Vista’s related services, represents a highly specialized type of social skills intervention that teaches students which characteristics of autism spectrum disorder apply to him or her. The ultimate goal of training results in the students using this knowledge to assist in problem solving, behavior change, and self-advocacy.

Common areas of social skills instructional sequences include:

  • Taking others’ perspective
  • Regulating emotional responses
  • Advocating and solving problems
  • Communicating in a shared and appropriate manner
  • Making and keeping friends
  • Preventing & responding to bullying
  • Preparing for work and/or college
  • Understanding, appreciating, and accommodating for their disability
  • Organizing materials
  • Managing time
  • Replacing problem behavior with more adaptive behavior

  • Vista Outreach professionals provide teams timely and comprehensive progress monitoring reports.  Included elements are graphed data, a clear statement of progress for each component of monitored goals, and clear descriptions of intervention changes applied during the reporting period.

Vista Outreach Services provides consultation to classrooms, students, and teachers

    Classroom Design & Consultation
With the growing autism population, many school districts are opening autism support classrooms of their own.  Whether the district decides to run an all purpose or Competent Learner Model classroom, Vista Outreach professionals assist districts in designing a district-run autism support classroom.  We assist personnel in setting up the physical structure of the classroom. We consult to the classroom throughout the year regarding grouping students, planning lessons for individuals and groups, and managing the classroom and student behavior.

    Training & Support
Vista Outreach professionals consult to the IEP teams regarding instructional strategies, adaptations to improve student performance, generalization, and maintenance. We provide guided practice for different instructional strategies and behavior support plans to the IEP team. We assist teachers in ordering the right materials or creating materials to meet student needs. We assist the IEP team in determining items and activities, which function as reinforcement and how to use them contingently to maximize student performance. We help teams understand how autism spectrum disorders affect participation within educational and community settings.

    Data Collection & Analysis
Vista Outreach professionals instruct the IEP team in data collection methods in order to make analysis optimally useful.  Vista knows that more direct data measures and more precisely defined behaviors of interest, the better the information collected.  We also know that resources available in public school settings may not always lend themselves to follow the best guidelines, and we work with each team to determine the best data measure with the resources available to the team, so that the best information can be collected within the setting.  We analyze data to determine future needs for intervention. We present data in visual displays to make it understandable to all team members.

    Behavior Plans & Intervention
Vista Outreach professionals design appropriate data collection methods and when available, train IEP team members to collect data. We collect and analyze functional assessment data to determine why contextually inappropriate behaviors are occurring. We lead the IEP team in designing a behavior plan based on this data driven functional assessment. We demonstrate intervention techniques required to implement the behavior plan and provide feedback to staff implementing the plan.

    IEP Process
Vista Outreach professionals assist staff in preparing for the IEP process by determining present levels of education, strengths and needs and based on that information, generate goals and objectives and specially designed instruction. We participate in the IEP process and attend parent conferences, team meetings, and IEP meetings at the IEP teams’ request.
