Meet ‘Officer Becky’

  • Rebecca Kessler, “Officer Becky” as she’s fondly known at The Vista School, is a Derry Township police officer and friend to students and staff she encounters on her regular visits to campus.

Please tell us briefly what you do and what it entails.
I primarily conduct patrol duties, such as traffic enforcement, crash investigation, and generally respond to calls for service. My current assignment is to the Community Services Section, so I also appear at community events, give speeches, and organize events, such as National Night Out, along with my regular patrol duties.

What do you love most about your job?
I get to interact with many different people and hopefully help them get through some difficult situations.

What do you like to do in your free time?
I love to spend time with my husband Dillon and 10-month-old son, Kyle. We enjoy going for walks, reading, swimming, attending community events, and visiting the butterflies at the Hershey Gardens.

What’s your role at The Vista School and how do you interact with students and staff?
I have been given the great privilege of visiting with the students once a month. I get to walk from classroom to classroom and meet with the students (if they want to) and chat with them. If a student is verbal, and the teacher wants me to, I ask the students identifying information so that they are better prepared in case they ever are lost and come across a police officer.

What do you find inspiring about Vista?
I love the positive attitude that everyone has. I always look forward to my visits because it’s always very uplifting no matter how the rest of my day has been.

What do you wish other people knew about Vista and individuals with autism?
I’m always surprised when I speak with people and find out that they don’t know about the Vista School. I wish that more people knew about Vista and the great work the staff does with the students on a daily basis. I wish that more people would take the time to try to understand and interact with individuals with autism, so that they can find out what wonderful people they are.
